1 Year Ago Today...

One year ago today was my first day "back at school".  For those who are not aware, I currently am working in the same building I went to school in for middle and high school! Sitting at the same lunch tables, seeing some of the same faces, and of course listening to the same end of the day announcements from Mrs. Boatwright! It was such a crazy feeling to be back as an employee, but it has been so worth it.

Norfolk Collegiate is an independent school in Norfolk, VA that has been around for over 65 years! I work in the Development office with three lovely women who all add their personal touches that make our team work well together. My official title at Norfolk Collegiate is Alimni Relations Coordinator. I know, how fitting right?!?! But that's why this job is perfect for me. Coming into this job I knew I would feel comfortable with classes ranging from 5 or 6 years ahead of me all the way down to the most recent graduating class! It would be more of a challenge getting to know some of the classes in the 70's, 80's, and 90's, but that's what I love about my job. I get to meet new people that at one point in thier lives made memories in the same hallways that I did.  I get to plan events that bring people back together that haven't seen eachother or the school since graduation! It's a great feeling to remind someone of tier high school because to me, high school definitely helped make me the person I am today.

I am so honored to be working at my alma mater and see it continue to improve, grow, and thrive! I love being able to share the news of the school with former parents and alumni and keep them in the loop on what's happening there now!

Year 2 can only continue to improve the alumni relations the school has! Here's to many more successful events and more alumni coming back to the school this year!

Happy Monday! + Guest Post

Good morning blog world! Sorry I have been MIA a little lately. I found myself busy last week and when that happens sometimes blog world gets away from me! Anyways, what better week in the year than 4th of July week!?! If any of you know me well, you would know that July 4th is one of my favorite holidays! This year, I will be celebrating July 4th with family down in Raleigh and the Mudcats!

Anyway, today I am blogging over at Frankly My Dear about why you should come spend your 4th of July (or any holiday) in Virginia!

And for the sake of a pretty picture, how awesome are my flowers! This is the fourth color that has popped up this summer!!

Whatever is Lovely [Morgan Alexandra Giveaway]

Today I am so excited to share one of my favorite new Etsy shops, Morgan Alexandra! Morgan is a recent college graduate from NC State and new to the blog world.  With her creative skills, she designed a beautiful website and blog to showcase her amazing prints.

When I found out about Morgan through her cousin, Christina, I knew I had to make my first purchase.  With AST at my core, I had to go with the Whatever is lovely print.  It was so fitting since we use that quote in one of our passages.
I was so impressed by the quick delivery, stunning packaging, and tip top branding of her Morgan Alexandra Designs. So I immediately reached out to Morgan to see if she would be interested in giving my lovely readers some great giveaways. And of course, her sweet southern self said YES!

So today, I am happy to announce my first SOLO blog giveaway! Morgan has been so gracious to offer the chase your dream and whatever is lovely print to two lucky winners!

The giveaway will be open for 1 week! Remember to come back all week and tweet about the giveaway for more options to enter!!

2 out of 6 2014 Weddings: Christy and Stephan

[Disclaimer: If I would have taken the real camera, it wouldn't have ended pretty. Beware of iPhone photo overload!]

This past weekend I was so honored to be able to witness the love Christy and Stephan have for each other at their wedding.  It was a beautiful day for a wedding.  The weather was perfect, not too hot or too cold.  The ceremony and reception both took place at The Marina Shores Yacht Club in the Coastal Room.

The ceremony was outside but it had a roof over top with lots of fans, so the guests were not sweating! Christy seriously looked stunning, don't y'all think?! Her dress was elegant with a little sexiness and it looked so perfect on her body.  She had each chair on the aisle covered with a teal ribbon and the rest were left without one.  It looks super pretty.

The men were wearing grey suits with two different color teals as their vest and tie colors.  Stephan looked so excited to see Christy when she came around the corner.  Christy's dad is retired Navy and Stephan is currently serving our country as a Marine.  So it was fitting to see a Navy priest step out for the ceremony.

After the ceremony was finished, the guests were ushered into the Coastal Room which was located right off of the deck the ceremony was on.  The room  had team uplighting and lights that made us feel like we were under water.  The overall theme was "nautical" with knots, water, blue, etc.

Christy and I met through my dear friend Ansley.  Both of their husbands played soccer together at VMI and are both now in the Marines.  Since Ansley's husband couldn't be at our wedding, Christy came as her date! And now since neither Chris nor D.J. was able to make it to Christy's Ansley and I were each other's dates!!

The cake was so beautiful and fit in the theme perfectly. It was also extremely delicious.  I am pretty sure I had to hunt down the server for a piece.  Oops.

And of course, the garter/bouquet toss is one of my favorites at a wedding...

Except when your married and can't participate :(

Overall, the night was great and I had so much fun celebrating the love we all have for our husbands over the past 7 months! I kinda felt like we were on 4 weddings, right Ans and Christy?!

The beautiful, happy, loving couple is off enjoying their marriage in Cabo down in Mexico!!

This weekend I will add #3 to the list of 2014 weddings!!!

#baseballwifelife - Whoa, we're halfway there

Whoa, livin' on a prayer.
Take my hand, we'll make it I swear.
Whoa, livin' on a prayer.

Anyone else feeling like this right about now? For us baseball wives, its been 73 days since the season began and I feel like I am livin' on a prayer, that's for damn sure.
These past 73 days have had their ups and downs.  D.J. has been settling well into the starting rotation and his arm is adjusting well to being a starter again.  I've said it before, and I will say it a thousand more times: I am so thankful that he is so close this season.  I have been able to make it down to Raleigh a good amount of the weekends they are home.  I also made the road trip to Potomac Nationals and Myrtle Beach Pelicans.  Both were such great weekends and I am excited to add more ball parks to my list!

The last few outings before the All Star Break were a little tough.  Probably one of the lowest points of the first half for us.  I think we both just needed a refresher.  We needed time together in our home, being husband and wife. I will admit though, it was a little hard having D.J. home for more than 24 hours.  Kinda put a kink in my normal routine.  Typically I go home from work, hit up the gym, eat, then listen to the baseball game.  Well since there was no game to listen to and my husband was home, those things didn't happen. I found myself reverting right back to the "off-season" thinking.  I wanted to ask D.J. to do so many things on my to-do list around the house, but I forgot that this is his break.  He has been playing baseball almost everyday for the past 73 days.  THAT'S A LOT OF BASEBALL PEOPLE! In my mind, I was thinking "Finally! My husband is home.  No more mowing the grass, taking the trash out, or fixing something when it breaks!" But that wasn't reality.  That won't happen for another 73 days! Thankfully my parents are so helpful when it comes to those things.  Both my parents help keep my yard looking good.  My dad will sometimes come mow the grass without telling me and my mom always stops by to check on my flowers.  This is part of the reason we decided to buy a house in Norfolk, so we were close to my family.  In the same breath, I am proud of myself that I am able to be independent and do things on my own.  I can proudly say I know how to change an air filter, use power tools, and shape up the bushes!

The All Star break was awesome for us.  Sunday night  Monday morning, around 2 a.m,. D.J. arrived home and came straight to bed. We said hi and then went straight to sleep.  He called me when he got in the driveway to come open the door so he wouldn't scare me or Stryker.  Monday morning I had to wake up and go to work.  Talk about Monday mornings being hard to get out of bed?! Well it's even harder when your hubby is only home for 72 hours.  After work we went over to my parents house and had a delicious buffet of crabs seasoned with Old Bay. Anyone's mouth watering thinking about that?! We watched the USA World Cup soccer game, ate ice cream, and played cards.  It was a great time with the family!
Tuesday I went to work while D.J. was off enjoying a 90 minute massage. Ugh, jealous. He came home and was an awesome husband (as always) and did some yard work then went to play with Stryker in the pool! Tuesday after work, I came home and D.J. was exhausted.  Rough day getting a massage right?? We were planning on doing dinner at home and cooking something, but ended up at Texas Roadhouse with Ansley instead! We went down to Virginia Beach after dinner to play putt putt! In typical fashion, we both ended the night falling asleep to the UVA baseball game.
Wednesday D.J. packed up all his stuff and hit the road for NC, after bringing me lunch like a great husband does of course!

The All Star Break was great and I am so excited to say we are halfway through the 2014 season!!! For all you baseball ladies out there, stay strong! WE CAN DO IT!

Sponsor Spotlight: A Southernly Belle Vie

Today I want to spend some time getting to know my lovely sponsor, Alysse! She is so sweet and I am excited for y'all to learn more about her! While she takes over Blog with the Browns, I will be over at A Southern Belle Vie answering her questions! You can get the basic info from this...
But I want you to hear more! Here she is!

1) If you could describe your style in a few short words what would you say and why?
My style could best be described as, Jackie-O with a touch of country.  Very rarely will you catch me without my pearls on.  Whether it's an early morning work out, a dinner date with my handsome, or in the duck blind with the guys.

2) How did you and your boyfriend meet?
Funny story.  Christian and I met on Facebook.  We actually didn't know each other from Adam but we had mutual friends who knew each other.  We still laugh about it to this day... we've been inseparable ever since!

3) Besides photography, what do you do for a living?
My full time day job is with the Elections Balloting Division for Louisiana.  We assist, coordinate, and support all 64 parishes.  We build elections, ballots, and everything in between.  My job is very challenging but the reward is so worth it.

4) What are your top five favorites: color, food, song, movie, and number?
Color to Wear: Teal and purple
Color in General: Pink
Food: Boiled Crawfish or a Turtle Sauce Piquant
Song: Look At Us by Vince Gill
Movie: The Guardian
Number: 14

5) If you could travel anywhere, where would you choose to go and why?
I would probably travel to Alaska.  I'd die and go to heaven if I had the chance to go on a big game hunt up there!

6) Tell me about having a boyfriend who works offshore at any given notice?
To be quite honest it takes a strong woman to stand behind a man who earns his living in the oilfield.  Christian has traveled around the world twice.  Traveling to places like Thailand, Egypt, and Africa.  You have to be able to fend for yourself and kids if you have that blessing.  Even though he misses 80% of life most important happenings, I wouldn't trade this lifestyle for the world.  He's the most dedicated and hard working man I could ever meet {besides my Daddy, of course}.  Christian absolutely loves being a diesel mechanic and it's something I would never in a million years try and take away from him.

7) What made you start blogging?
I'm getting at the age where a lot of fun things are happening.  I wanted an outlet where I could express my creativity and share my little slice of heaven with y'all.  Sure, I could of used Instagram or Facebook, and I plan on continuing to use those outlets, but I wanted something more... a place I could connect with other bloggers!

8) How do you find time to blog with everything going on?  What keeps you going?
I try to keep a balance between my hectic schedules.  When I get home in the evenings, I have a home cooked dinner to prepare, dishes to wash, and clothes to fold.  At any given point you would probably assume that spare time is not in my vocabulary; which 85% of the time you are correct.  I've been really good about planning out my blogging post with what's going on that week.  I'm a planner so I feel much more at ease and confident with my choices if I have a mapped out plan A and plan B.

9) What are some of your favorite hobbies?
I've always been a creative girl.  So anything dealing with crafts + art comes as second nature to me.  I've also gained the nick name, Betty Crocker.  You can bet your last dollar that you won't ever leave my house hungry.  Instead you'll probably leave stuffed like a tick.  I think it's partly because of our southern culture and nature.  We're kind hearted people down here.  We sit on our front porches in the evenings and bow our heads when a funeral is passing down the road.  Down here in South Louisiana we also love our outdoors.  Like I always tell people who meet me for the first time, don't let the pearls, hair, and makeup fool you... I LOVE to hunt, fish, and be outdoors with the guys.  Louisiana is known as God's country, so why not enjoy it?

10) Lets say your boyfriend just proposed, what is the first thing you will book when planning your wedding?
Not you too? Haha.  Christian is an absolutely joy to be around.  He's my prince charming that rode in with a cowboy hat and dirty boots.  Lately A LOT of our family and friends have been teasing me about le ring.  I get butterflies every time I think about it!  I guess I should expect it since it's the "next step" in our relationship {being that we just purchased our first home together} but I'm so completely content with life right now that I would wait 10 years for a ring.

If I had to pick the first thing I would book, I would definitely say the Church.  Christian and I are both Catholics.  We were raised in Catholic homes and will raise our children in the same manner.  Being the good Southern man Christian is, he continuously provides for us and our future family... not only money or material wise, but he provides the path and foundation of a loving Catholic household.  Every night before we eat our dinner we say grace and each Sunday that he's home we attend Sunday morning mass.  It's one of my favorite qualities about him.  We joke about our future wedding and have guestimated that our wedding guest list is around 450 people...not kidding!}

11) What are one {or some} goals that you are working toward this year?
My goals for this year is to be a better friend, listen more, and give back more.  I also have a goal of "unplugging" from devices and social media more.

12) Describe your ideal day.
My ideal day would be one of two things... waking up before the sun rises on opening day of duck/deer season and killing our limit of ducks/a nice buck. The thrill of getting the first shot on either of those hunts is absolutely indescribable. Now before y'all go all anti-gun and anti-hunting on me, we do not kill to kill animals.  We hunt to provide meals for our families.  If you were to look in our freezer right now you'd probably find one pack of chicken breasts and one pack of ground meat.  We were taught how to live off the land and it's something I'm adamant about teaching our future children.  OR a day spent at the beach, standard!

13) Tell me all about Alysse Guidroz.
Well for starters, I am 5'4" with red hair and bright green eyes!  I'm a Christmas baby, I love a good glass of Cabernet Sauvignon, and I am a die hard Yankees fan.  As you already know, I love to hunt and fish, but I also love to spend time with my family and friends.  When I was a child, getting ready to start Pre-K, I had a speech problem that had to be fixed with lots of speech therapy.  To this day there are still words that I cannot pronounce.  I'm also ambidextrous, I can do absolutely everything and anything with both of my hands.  I may be tiny but I come in full force, I'm determined, compassionate, and I wear my heart on my sleeve.  I'm a girl rooted in my Southern beliefs, morals, and culture.

14) What is your go to meal to cook for you and your boyfriend?
Christian, thank you sweet baby Jesus, is NOT a picky eater.  So anything I cook for dinner he eats.  But some of his favorites are: smothered pork in a gravy, or as we call it down here, Griads, he also loves shrimp fettuccini, crawfish etouffee, corn maqushoe. and sautéed asparagus.

15) What is your favorite blog post?
My favorite blog post would have to be my very first blog post!

16) Turning a house into a home is so much fun.  What are some of your next big projects?
You're so right!  I absolutely love playing into the housewife roll.  Hopefully one day my dream of being a stay at home mom will come true!  Some of our next big projects are little things throughout the house like painting, finishing our master bed room, etc... Christian would like to build a brick pizza oven/fire place outside as well as install a nice grill and bar for outdoor gatherings!  I keep joking with him that he has to be home for longer than a week for that to happen! haha

17)  How did you come up with the title of your blog?
Being from Cajun Country my southern roots run deep.  And so does my Cajun French Heritage.  I can't count how many times I get called out on my accent! Throughout K-8th grade I was enrolled in a program called French Immersion.  It's a program where students take every subject in, well, French!  As the years progressed I became very fluent in franglais!  It's a cross between French and English and a term I clearly coined myself ;-)  Eventually a light bulb went off in my head and A Southernly Belle Vie was born!  To translate it means a southernly good life!  Half French and half English!

18)  If you could have one super power, what would it be?
If I could have one super power it would most likely be having the ability to visit loved ones in heaven!

19) What have you gained from blogging?
I've gained SO much more than I could of ever imagined from blogging.  I've gained new friendships from all across the United States as well as a better understanding of myself.  I'm certainly glad with my decision to begin my blogging journey!

20) Everyone has that "one" thing they always have as an interesting fact about them in their back pocket ready to pull out at any time.  What is yours?
I don't know that most people would find it interesting, but, I had a full ride softball scholarship to a college here in Louisiana before I blew out my shoulder my Senior year.  Softball was a MAJOR part of my life.  I played SS and had the arm to go with it.  To say those were my glory days would be an understatement.  Hearing those words from a doctor your Senior year in high school is heart breaking but being that determined and "don't take no for an answer" kind of girl that I am, I finished out my Senior year.  I also managed to break my nose and dislocate two fingers that year.  I was destined to NOT finish out the season but I had another vision.  I prayed to the good Lord above and he helped me through it!  It's kind of like I turn into a fierce little girl when I step onto that field, nothing can hold me back... not even diving for an out of play ball.  In order to finish my high school career I had to adjust my hitting habits.  I slapped and quick bunted on the left hand side a good portion of the season.  When the season was over, I was awarded 1st team all district short stop, academic all state, and all state.  Oh what I would give to relive those days!

21) Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself married to that sweet, kind, handsome, God-fearing, man of mine.  Hopefully with the biggest blessing, on the way, that God could ever give us.  Christian and I have decided that we would LOVE to have 3 children but we will take how many God feels is right for us.  If I had it my way we'd have 5+.  But in all reality, raising 5 kiddies while you're husband is away most of the time could and would probably get a little tough to handle!  Who knows, maybe in five years I'll be living out my dream of a stay-at-home Mommy! Ohhhh wishful thinking ladies!

Ryan Moved In!

I am so excited that my house is officially at "max capacity" with the arrival of one of my all time besties, Ryan! I know, you may be thinking "what is this crazy girl doing?! Running a hostel!?" Well, no... but kind of! Colleen will be with me till the end of the summer and Ryan will be here till she leaves for her trip of a lifetime to Europe!

Ryan and I have been friends since 7th grade.  Well, technically we were friends before that, but we joke each other and say "We weren't friends until you moved back from Japan!" But I will never forget, Ryan was at my house for a sleepover a few nights before we moved and that's when the true friendship started :).

Lets take a look back at our friendship with the help of some great (but maybe embarrassing) pictures!

We have celebrated Sweet Sixteens,

Been to countless homecomings, proms, and Cotilions,

Seen probably over twenty country concerts,

Taken some really hilarious pictures,

graduated from high school and college together,

explored the world outside our little bubble to Cancun,

learned how to snowboard, went on hikes, and embraced everything that JMU offered us,

celebrated our 21st birthday's together,

stood by my side on one of the biggest days of my life,

and made trips to Nashville to take in the full experience of Music City.

Needless to say, our lives have been shaped around each other and I wouldn't have it any other way.  I am so thankful for such a great friend in my life and let me tell y'all, I landed the friend jackpot with my girls.  I have some of the best friends in the whole wide world!

I am so excited to have Ryan in the house for the next few months and cannot wait to continue this journey with her!

5 Benefits of Guest Blogging

TRAVEL BABBLES

Today I am blogging over at Travel Babbles for Kym while she and her hubby are enjoying the Mexican sun for his 30th birthday! I love that Kym is a hockey wife and I am able to reach more professional sports spouses on her blog today!

I have been slacking on 5 on Friday's simply because by the time Friday rolls around, all I am thinking about is the weekend and enjoying a few days off! So today, I wanted to talk a little about the Benefits of Guest Blogging since I have been on two different blogs this week!

one. increase in numbers
This week I did two guest posts on two different blogs and I co-hosted a giveaway with some other lovely bloggers and my numbers have SKYROCKETED! In the last 7 days, my instagram account has gained 143 new followers! My GFC followers went from 30 to 81!!!! I can honestly say this is because of the guest blogs and the giveaway.

two. new blog friends
Obviously with new followers, comes new blog friends! I am excited to see the one of the newest #baseballwifelife girls, Hannah has created a blog and is my newest follower! Hannah and I began talking on Facebook a while back before her (at the time) boyfriend got drafted. She is now an engaged woman who is beginning her #baseballwifelife this season!

three. increasing my reach
It's always exciting to get my blog more looks from new visitors.  It's intriguing to see how one post can increase followers,  reach a new audience and even be posted throughout social media all day.

four. improve writing skills
Sometimes I find myself writing my posts with the mindset that everyone knows who I am talking about.  I am reminded that when I guest post, I need to be more specific and explain more in my posts for all my readers to stay connected with my life.

five. ideas for new posts
Reading all the other posts from guest bloggers generates new ideas on what I can post about.  I have found that most guest posts are "top 10", "best/worse", "tips" themed.  I will be sure to include these ideas in the next guest blog posts!

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend! I will be back on Monday with the details and play-by-play of the lovely Christy's wedding to her groom Stephan!

Weekend Wrap Up: Baseball Signs Galore

This weekend was full of finishing off some orders and getting this bronze of mine on!
Friday night we had a happy hour downtown Norfolk for work.  It was a great turnout and really wrapped up the school year for parents and faculty.  After the happy hour, I went to my parents house to see the whole gang to have crabs! My brother, Bobby, was in town for the weekend so we all tried to get together.  By the time I got home, Bobby was already out with friends so we missed eachother.  After I had some food, I took Stryker back home and we laid low for the night.

Saturday morning I woke up, did some lawn work (I wish the bird and squirrels would eat my weeds instead of my plants!), and then had a hair appointment at 9.  It was a long overdue hair appointment, considering my husband told me my highlights were growing out! I got a little trim while I was there too.  Afterwards I went to Norfolk Collegiate for the 4th Annual David Gayle Memorial Lacrosse Game! It was a great turnout and the scholarship raised a ton of money.  It was a great way to remember a friend and carry on his spirit.

After the game, Ansley, Colleen and I hit the beach.  It was so great to chat with Ans since I haven't seen/talked to her in AGES because of her grad school! But now she is graduated, so she is all mine! Saturday night I babysat for some pretty awesome kiddos and got home late.

Sunday morning I slept in till about 8:30.  I got up early to finish some signs to have them in the mail tomorrow!

So excited to be able to document these baseball families stories and can't wait to finish the next two over this week!
Sunday afternoon I laid by the pool, threw the ball to Stryker in the pool, and then went down to Harborfest for about an hour or two.  We had a nice family dinner outside followed by a game of Hand & Foot with mom, Bob, and Nana!

I hope you all had a fabulous weekend and are looking forward to a great week of blog posts from Blog With The Browns!

And even though its Monday, its a Happy Summer Hours Monday to me!

Currently...

Making: A to-do list for the month of June. I know, its going to be a long one.
Cooking: Well I did just make some delicious chocolate chip cookies last week! I am not one for cooking.
Drinking: Water, water, and more water.
Reading: Allegiant, the 3rd book in the Divergent trilogy.
Wanting: A new computer.  Mine is over 6 years old and its so worn.  I am going to start doing some research on new computers over the next few weeks.
Looking: Pretty tan for it being June 4th.
Wasting: Opportunities to take good photographs.  I try to take my good camera with me everywhere, but sometimes I just forget!
Wishing: Somehow I could work from home, travel with D.J., have no bills, I was somewhere in the Caribbean sitting on the beach with a drink in my hand.. is that too much to ask for?!
Enjoying: Sleeping with my pup. He is seriously the best snuggle buddy.  Like I'm talking head on pillow, paws on my hand kind of snuggler!
Waiting: For my little cousins to get here for the whole month of July!
Liking: The fact my husband will be home for a few days in less than two weeks!
Wondering: Who the Indians are going to take this year in the draft.  It's on Thursday! Crazy to think it's already been 2 year since the draft.
Loving: How close I live to the beach.  Something I always take for granted!
Hoping: Stryker's annual vet appointment goes well this afternoon.
Smelling: My shampoo. And my lotion.  Pretty relaxing if I must say so myself.
Wearing: My pijamas (baggy t-shirt of D.J.'s) since I am attempting to get out of my bed!
Noticing: Flowers take longer to develop that I want them to.  Patience is a virtue they say.
Knowing: That Bob will be home this weekend makes me smile! Yay for family!
Thinking:  About David.  This will be the 4th Annual David Gayle Memorial Fundrasier and I cannot wait to see everyone out there remembering such a great friend.
Giggling: That it is already Wednesday! Happy Hump Day!

Hope everyone has a great day :)
