DIY Window Boxes

It's been a while since I did a DIY project, but this one seemed easy enough to put together and save some few bucks while I was at it.  I knew I needed some type of color in the window treatments for the bathroom, but indecisive Cayte didn't know what fabric would be best.  So after about six months of figuring that out, I finally decided on some! 

My awesome uncle made these two window boxes for me and let me borrow his staple gun and then it was game on from there. I got some batting from a local fabric store and cut it to the measurements of the board plus about 3 inches for it to fold over.

  

 The corners were the hardest part, but I just folded them over like I would do when wrapping a present.

Once the batting was stapled in place, I placed the fabric where I wanted it and started stapling away.

And the finished product....

Be sure the check back next week once I get them up in the bathrooms!

DIY: Home is where Baseball Sends Us Part 2

Last week I showed y'all the preview of a project I was working on, and here is the final product!

Thanks to my awesome father-in-law, I had the wood pre-made for me by him and the eye hooks installed in the wood.  

First things first- I had to go to the store and get some supplies.  I knew I was going to spray paint the wood and paint pen the letters so I knew what I needed.  The person that helped me at The Home Depot was by far the best customer service experience I have ever experienced.  Lee was so helpful and stuck by my side the whole time.  He even helped me get the stuff I needed for the next project I am going to work on!

So after getting the spray paint, paint pens, and a few other items that I will tell you about later, I was ready to start! 

Next thing I did was tape off the metal hooks because I didn't want them to get spray painted.  I just used some painters tape, but any tape would work.

I knew going into this project that if I spray painted them, it would go much faster, but if I do it again, I would make sure I spray painted in the garage.  When I left it out to dry, I could tell some dust got in it so it's a little grainy.  Lesson learned.

I ended up doing two-ish coats of spray paint.  While I was doing this, I found a few fonts that I like on the computer and did a mock up of the design so I had the right spacing. 

And after about and hour of doing the writing, I had the finished product!

I wanted to put the miles from Norfolk to the team's home stadium so we will remember how far we were from each other during these times!

 

I ended up putting the sign on the wall right when you walk in the front door.  It's a perfect location and there is plenty of room to add on as we get moved around!  Another things I learned making this one is that the eye hooks need to be even or else the "location" boards will not fall evenly down when placed against the wall.  This is something that probably only I would notice though!

The size of the top board is 17 in x 9 in and the "location" board are 12 in x 3.5 in.  For all of my baseball ladies out there, or any other sports for that matter (or military!!) You can customize the color of the wood, certain colors of the lettering, and I don't mind adding or removing things that you see or don't see!

DIY: Home is Where Baseball Sends Us

Have y'all seen these before?

If not, then you are missing out.  These beauties have been made typically for families in the Armed Services. But this baseball wife is bringing them to the baseball world!

So my awesome father-in-law made this wood sign for me and I am going to make it into the first (that I have seen) "Home is Where Baseball Sends Us" sign!

My awesome father-in-law, Dennis (HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!) is so talented. I showed him a picture, gave him some measurements and next week I had this all ready to be painted!

After going back and forth on a few things, I decided to go with the layout below. I like to see the miles of all the locations that D.J. goes and how far they are from Norfolk.  I also am going to leave some space next to the years in case he goes back to a certain place again.  For example, Spring Training will have 2013, 2014 and will leave space for the years to come! 

This is a weekend project, so hopefully next week I will have an update on the finished product!

Home Improvement Week 5: Antique China Cabinet

This is not necessarily a DIY post, but its still home improvement! 

We were so fortunate to inherit this piece of furniture from my childhood friend Allena when her grandmother passed away.  She had no room for it in her house, so without asking D.J. or my dad, AKA my movers, we had committed to getting the furniture!

When I first looked at it, I was afraid we wouldn't have enough room for it on our dining room.  I thought it would stick out too far.  But when we got it into the house, it was a perfect fit!

I have been waiting for a piece like this to store all of our glasses we got as wedding gifts! It truly could not have been a better fit in our dining room.  I love the way I can use the bottom for storage and how there are three levels in the glass section at the top.

If any of my photographer friends know to to edit out my reflection- PLEASE let me know :)

Everyone loves Williamsburg Winery and these Castudio glasses!

I also scored these beautiful blue and white dessert dishes! So cute and they go perfect with our set we have!

Any suggestions on what I should put on top of the piece? Plants? Plates? Any suggestions would be apprecaited!

Home Improvement Week 4: Burlap Wreath [part 2]

Oh lord- time to hunker down today! We had some major snow hit us over the past 12 hours! As in, 10 inches a lot of snow.  We have been outplaying all morning with Stryker and shoveling the snow out of the driveway. So guess what that means?! I actually had time to finish the wreath! If you are trying to make one of these, I would recommend buying extra burlap.  You can always use it someplace else around your house if you have leftovers.  Last week I bought all the supplies, but I ran out of burlap so here is the finished product.

The coloring in the picture is a little off...the B is red and navy!

 

Since I got the hang of weaving the burlap in and out of the green loops, I redid the whole thing.  I ended up using 6 rolls of burlap total. I finished it off by hot gluing the last piece to the beginning knot I tied. Here is a look at what the wreath looked like before I added the B to it.  I love the way it looks plain too.

I was not 100% sure how to attach the "B" to the wreath and considered not even putting it on.  I ended up just hot gluing a string to the back of the B and tied ti around the burlap. This way, we can change it out as new seasons come. Painting the B Cleveland Indians colors was the extra added touch that makes the wreath perfect!
